Becky's Picks: Bacon-wrapped dough
It's high time we talk about something savory on this blog! How about a bacon pouch to encase your mounds of dough? (Even better if it came pre-packed with the dough!)
My rating: 4/5 stars

The weather today is SUPER HOT (like August hot and it's only April)! As you can imagine, I'm totally distracted and scheming plans to leave work early and bask in the sunshine. Wait, what? I totally did not just write that.
Aside from ditching (which I'm not planning to do, whyeverwouldyouthinksuchathing), this 93-degree weather is clouding my mind with thoughts of one thing: HOT, SIZZLING BACON!
1. Bacon for the mouth
"Bacone" = A bacon cone filled with scrambled eggs and country gravy topped with a biscuit. (Not only do I love bacon containers, I have a thing for biscuits.)
A bacon shawl, especially awesome if you believe (like I do) everything is better when wrapped in bacon!Posted by becky at 4/27/2009 2 comments

My inbox is BULGING with bacon. It's time to muck out my messages and post them where they belong -- on my blog, for the universe to savor.
Item 1: Bacon Art
"Bacon is like a little hug from God" - inspired words, indeed! I filed this message in my e-mail folder labeled "gifts," meaning I should buy this for myself at some point in the future. Or, if you're feeling spendy and loving, you can save me some cash and buy me a copy here.
The seasons may change
The sizzle remains the same
Find your meat constant.

I know I've already covered bacon this week (or did bacon cover me) (Since when is extra bacon a problem?!) (Also, is using back-to-back parenthetic sentences against some literary law?), but my new favorite food blog deserves your attention:
The site highlights outrageous culinary "creations" which often feature our beloved bacon.
Like BACON-wrapped meatloaf with a layer of mac and cheese:
And "BACON Poutine" - french fries topped with cheese curds, hard-boiled egg, BACON and a slathering of brown gravy.
Or BACON, egg and cheese burgers on a Krispie Kreme donut.
And in honor of my gorgeous sister-in-law (who has a soft-spot for turducken), there's turBACONucken: a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey, all wrapped in BACON.
Which bacon-y delight is tempting you to sacrifice your weekly caloric intake and overall heart and artery health in the name of deliciousness?
I'm leaning toward this (sorry BACON!):

Today I feel compelled to follow the sage wisdom of our dear Michael Scott and present you with a dose of bacon-y goodness. After all, who doesn't love the smell of fresh bacon in the morning?!

It's time once again to celebrate the most glorious meat on the planet. This gem came into my inbox via an awesome co-worker, with the headline: "You are a trendsetter."
I thought she was sending a picture of shoes.
Behold:
The "Bacon Explosion" was recently featured in a New York Times article.
Here are the highlights:
"The Bacon Explosion is a massive torpedo-shaped amalgamation [editor's note: I love the word amalgamation] of two pounds of bacon woven through and around two pounds of sausage."There are some competing claims as to the origination of this masterpiece. Bacon logs have been done before -- see here and here.
"...containing at least 5,000 calories and 500 grams of fat..."
"A man from Wooster, Ohio, wrote that friends had served it at a bon voyage party before his 10-day trip to Israel, where he expected bacon to be in short supply. 'It wasn’t planned as a send-off for me to Israel, but with all of the pork involved it sure seemed like it,' he wrote."

Baconnaise, the "ultimate bacon-flavored spread." I'm not a mayo fan, but I could totally get on board with this condiment.
Would you dare?

First, canned bacon. Simply open the can, unroll and eat. According to the online peddler: "For the first time in almost 20 years, canned bacon is back in this country. Not available in any store!"Also, Bacon Aioli. The creator concedes, "If there is a cooking hell, I just wrote myself a ticket."
"I cooked off a few strips of bacon that I found tucked away in my fridge intending to use it to top a nice chef salad. And then there were all those yummy drippings and crispy bits hanging around in the pan that, as usual, I was having a hard time coming to terms with having to throw away...later the inspiration struck: instead of aioli made with olive oil, why not try using all that bacony, yummy goodness in place of the oil?
"So, same deal as a traditional aioli, egg yolk and lemon juice and a small clove of garlic plus approximately equal measures of bacon drippings and olive oil. And once it was aioli-ified, I sort of went a little crazy and threw a strip of the cooked bacon into the food processor, too.
"The result was crazy good...like aioli on crack. Bacon crack. Crackoli."
That's my kind of recipe!

I'm neglectful -- shame on me. But it was for a good reason. I was relaxing/visiting friends/frolicking in the mountains/luxurizing on someone else's dollar/reuniting with the hubby in Park City. Oh, I'm sorry. Did I make you jealous? Don't feel bad -- my life picked up full speed exactly where I left off. (sigh)
Here, let me make it up to you.
Your eyes don't deceive you -- those really are BACON CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!
More info here.
And I promise pictures, pictures, words and pictures about my trip and husband-less June are just around the corner.

It's been a while since I've posted "Becky's Picks" and anything bacon-esque.
How did anyone survive?!
I now present two glorious bacon items to breathe life back into your soul, tantalize your taste buds and tempt your tongue .
With a Web site declaring "There's always room for bacon," (AMEN!) my first pick is a no-brainer. Just think: bacon steak, bacon corn, bacon fries, bacon burgers, bacon tacos, bacon roast, bacon veggies, bacon cornbread, bacon scrambled eggs, bacon shrimp -- all with a few flicks of the wrist.
Buy yours here and don't be surprised if you find a couple (or ten) bottles in your Christmas stocking.
My rating: 5/5 gloriously shiny bacon fat-fried stars
Next, a gem courtesy of the lovely Emily Jackson (famed photographer). Not only is she an artistic moment-capturer, she also has a great eye for bacon.
We can all agree chocolate bacon is not for the weak of stomach. Would you try it? (I'd probably dare Chris to eat a piece! Then giggle because I'm 5.)
My rating: 4/5 novelty stars

Mine goes by George. Just George. And since we bought a new, updated George with removable grill plates, he shall now be known as ILOVEYOUGEORGE!
Oh, and he's not just good with meat. He's a master with summer squash rubbed in olive oil, fresh rosemary, coarse salt and fresh cracked black pepper.
My rating: 5/5 stars
P.S. Michael loves Georges too. We so "get" each other.

Becky: Dinner was so yummy last night.Speaking of bacon...
Chris: Totally. But everyone probably thought I was a bad guy for pushing them out the door.
Becky: You weren't and you didn't. No one thought that.
Chris: We just had to get to our meetings.
Becky: Well not everyone in our family can be the favorite Wickstrom.
Chris: MEAN!
Becky: Or the favorite crazy bacon lover.

Ever since I saw these gems at Not Martha, bacon-y thoughts have been swirling around my head, but I kept them secret because I felt dirty and didn't want anyone to find out.
Now I'm announcing my bacon obsessing and I don't care who knows!
Hey World! I LOVE BACON.
And I'm planning to embrace my bacon love.
First I'll make several hundred of these.
Then I'll throw one of these.
Then I'll experiment with these.
Then curl up with my remote and giggle about this.
And because I'm feeling adventurous (er, suicidal?), I'll whip up a batch of these.
My rating for embracing bacon love: 5/5 stars

One of my favorite episodes. Name that griller:
"I enjoy having breakfast in bed. I like waking up to the smell of bacon- sue me- and since I don’t have a butler, I have to do it myself. So most nights before I go to bed I will lay six strips of bacon out on my George Foreman Grill. Then I go to sleep. When I wake up, I plug in the grill. I go back to sleep again. Then I wake up to the smell of crackling bacon. It is delicious. It’s good for me. It’s the perfect way to start the day. Today I got up, I stepped onto the grill and it clamped down on my foot. That’s it. I don’t see what’s so hard to believe about that…"Are you excited for Friday (technically Thursday) yet?

Camping in a remote rainforest? Nope, just rural Maryland. Oh, and no shortage of firewood.

Campsites spaced half a mile apart - no one to overhear our wierd and lively conversations!
Camp food - yum! Oh, and being around friends who don't care that you didn't change your clothes once, let alone brush your teeth. That's true friendship!!!
Imagining the look on the groomer's face upon seeing Fenway, the cutest dog in the world, covered in dirt, leaves, bugs and anything else caught in his fur.
